How to make a Wi-Fi QR code

  1. Type the network name (SSID) exactly as your phone shows it — capitals and spaces matter.
  2. Type the password, and pick the security type. Almost every home and office router today uses WPA2 or WPA3, so choose “WPA / WPA2 / WPA3” unless you know otherwise.
  3. Tick “Hidden network” only if your network doesn't appear in the list of nearby networks.
  4. Save the code as PNG or SVG and scan it with a second phone to test it before printing.

How it works

The code holds your network name, password and security type in the standard format that iPhone and Android cameras recognise. Scanning offers to join the network.

Scanning it

On an iPhone, open the Camera and point it at the code. Most Android phones read it from the camera app or Google Lens; on older phones a QR scanner app does the job.

Print it

Save as PNG or SVG and print it for a café counter, office reception or guest room. Add a caption like “Scan for Wi-Fi”, and laminate it or put it in a small clear stand so it lasts.

Security

Anyone who can see the code can join, so keep it inside. The password is never sent to a server — the code is made in your browser. For a shop, clinic or PG, set up a separate guest network on your router and put that one in the code, so customers never share the network your billing computer or CCTV uses.

When it doesn't connect

Check the spelling and capitals of the network name, and whether the password has been changed since you made the code. Many dual-band routers broadcast two names, one for 2.4 GHz and one for 5 GHz; make sure the code uses the one you want guests on.

Yes, the iPhone camera recognises Wi-Fi codes on iOS 11 and later.

What if I change my password?

Make a new code — the old one will stop working.
